Qianmen Boulevard and the memorial archway at Zhengyang Bridge

This reproduction of a silver gelatin print, taken sometime between 1933-1946, was photographed by Hedda Morrison in Peking, China. This street corner showing a camel train crossing the street with pedestrians crossing the street pushing carts and rickshaws was taken following a snowfall. In the distance is the Zhengyang Bridge Memorial Archway (‘pailou’) , she had photographed this from the south wall of the Tartar City (Inner City).

Morrison reveals in ‘A photographer in Old Peking’ (p.104)

“that this image depicted the ‘northern end of Ch’ien Men Street after snow had fallen and quickly begun to melt”
