“New Urbanity – The European City in the 21st Century”
Exhibition > February 22, 2009

From December 6, 2008 through February 22, 2009 Deutsches Architekturmuseum will be showcasing the exhibition “New Urbanity – The European City in the 21st Century”. As a result of the transformation of inner-city industrial sites and docks as well as the extension or redevelopment of existing districts into new urban quarters with a high quality of life, the European city is currently undergoing a renaissance.

Under the title “New Urbanity” the exhibition shows how the city center is being rediscovered as a place in which to live, work, and exist alongside one another.

The exhibition on the ground floor of the museum presents 17 urban planning projects completed in Europe over the past years. They reflect the current status of European urban planning and for the first time permit a critical appraisal of the most recent urban development. The focal point of the exhibition is in particular the importance of public space as a significant feature of the European city. Then projects are presented using atmospheric photographs, plans, and original models. The latter illustrate particularly well how individual buildings blend in with the urban context and unfold their spatial qualities.

The visualization of European urban planning plays a fundamental role in the exhibition: Relevant plans and large-format photographs demonstrate how the projects were completed step by step. Images also emerge, however, from the interplay between what has been built and the memory of city silhouettes. These images need to be constantly redefined, with regard to the 21st century and its still developing urban society.

Even today, the model of the “European City” has lost nothing of its charisma. Its strength lies in the fact that with regard to current challenges such as climate change, energy consumption and ground management, social and urban planning questions at local level it provides a number of individual solutions.
The projects displayed are exemplary demonstrations of how, with public spaces designed to a high quality and as places of social integration and cultural communication, cities can play a fundamental part in a functioning community.

The exhibition is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. It is curated by Dr. Annette Becker and Dr. Karen Jung. A catalogue published by Verlag Anton Pustet, Salzburg accompanies the exhibition.
