Alexander Roslin in brief:

Born Malmö, 15 July 1718. Died Paris, 5 July 1793.
Worked mainly in Paris, Stockholm and St. Petersburg.
Married to the artist Marie-Suzanne Giroust, portrayed in The Lady with the Veil. Together they had three sons and three daughters.
A good friend of Carl Gustaf Tessin.
Also known as “Roslin le Suédois” and, after 1772 when he was awarded the Royal Order of Vasa, “Roslin le Chevalier”.

During the second half of the 18th century, having one’s portrait painted by Roslin was the height of social prestige. His paintings, focussing as they do on the superficial, on the élitist culture of the 18th century with its predilection for extravagance and luxury consumption, are in some ways reminiscent of the high-society mores of today.
